The Kickbee is a wearable device that allows a pregnant mother to share the kicks and movements of her baby with her husband and family. The Kickbee is a stretchable band worn by a pregnant mother. Vibration sensors are attached directly to the band, and are triggered by movement underneath. The band and electronics are covered in a soft fabric cover for design and comfort. A microcontroller in the garment captures the movement and transmits the signals wirelessly to a computer running a custom application.
The application receives the sensor values and analyzes them. When a kick is detected, a message is posted to the social messaging service Twitter via its API (Application Programming Interface). Twitter makes it easy to share these short messages of "I kicked Mommy!" with family and friends, and allows them to be sent as text messages to any mobile phone in the world. The Twitter account can also act as a data log that can be accessed later for visualization or archiving.
A couple of weeks ago I posted a video the showed a great performance on looping beatbox by Shlomo http://bit.ly/poHhfb and to do that he uses a loopstation machine. Well I want to show you an open source alternative and introduce: Illusio, an open source digital musical instrument that allows the control of real-time recorded loops through collaborative performances based on relationships between sketches and sounds, intended to be ludic and playful.
Following the inspiring work of POKE with http://bakertweet.com/ ,
frogNY Build-It is working on a little hack of our office coffee pot that will hopefully do all of those things (and maybe more). This test run of our coffee pot hack uses an Arduino, LEDs, a photosensor, and a small speaker to sense when coffee brewing and play a short melody. Up next: tweeting.
