frogNY Build-It is working on a little hack of our office coffee pot that will hopefully do all of those things (and maybe more). This test run of our coffee pot hack uses an Arduino, LEDs, a photosensor, and a small speaker to sense when coffee brewing and play a short melody. Up next: tweeting.
Maybe useful for the long part of your trip. Let's see how it evolves for a real use.
